Romans 8:10

And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

Romans 8:10

Paul connects the indwelling Spirit with the reality of life: even though the body remains dead because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. The “body” here signifies the fallen, mortal aspect of human existence under sin’s grip. The Spirit’s life-giving power imports a new righteousness—an alignment with God that rebirth brings. The verse sits in the broader argument of Romans that justification by faith brings about a new creation life; Christ’s life within transforms the believer’s internal posture, even as mortality persists in the present. The tension between the body’s decay and the Spirit’s life is a lived reality for Christians: the already-but-not-yet of the kingdom.

This verse anchors the sanctification process: the Spirit’s life produces righteousness in the believer, a righteousness that starts inwardly and reconfigures outward living. The body’s deadness due to sin is not annihilated yet, but the Spirit’s resurrection power begins to reframe how one experiences daily life. It also emphasizes union with Christ: life in the Spirit is life in Christ’s righteousness, not in a self-righteous posture.

Practically, this means you can face weakness and still live by God’s truth. When sin tempts, invite the Spirit to energize your conscience toward righteousness. Daily rhythms matter: confession, repentance, and choosing Spirit-led options. Even when physical fatigue or illness weighs you down, lean into the Spirit’s life-giving power—choose acts that reflect Christ’s righteousness, like forgiving a debt you owe someone, or extending grace in a tense situation. Let the Spirit’s life sustain you through trials, reminding you that your identity is in Christ, not in your performance or strength.
