Romans 10:14
How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
Romans 10:14
Romans 10:14 asks a chain-of-reason questions: how will people call on whom they do not believe? how will they believe without hearing? how will they hear without a preacher? Paul is linking the necessary sequence for salvation: hearing the gospel leads to faith, which leads to calling on the Lord. The passage emphasizes the role of proclamation and the evangelistic function of the church. While it recognizes human responsibility, it also points to the necessity of preaching and sharing the gospel so that people may hear and respond.
This verse highlights the church’s missional commission: preaching the gospel is essential to the advancement of God’s kingdom. It acknowledges that hearing precedes faith and faith precedes salvation, and thus the church bears responsibility to declare Christ. It also respects human freedom to respond to grace once heard.
Practically, this calls you to participate in telling others about Jesus. If you’re hesitant, start with personal testimony—how you came to faith—and invite others to explore the faith. Support or participate in outreach initiatives, simple campaigns, or service projects that create opportunities to hear the gospel. Pray for opportunities to share and for open hearts to listen.
