Revelation 22:18

For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:

Revelation 22:18

Verse 18 contains a sober warning about adding to the prophecy of this book. The speaker, identifying himself as the prophetic messenger, warns that adding to the words will invite divine plagues described in the book. This is a safeguard against distortion, speculation, or false embellishment of prophetic Revelation. The context is still within a book full of symbolic language and apocalyptic imagery; readers are urged to treat the text with reverent care rather than manipulating it for personal agendas. It emphasizes the integrity of prophetic revelation and the responsibility of readers, teachers, and leaders to handle Scripture faithfully.

The warning reflects the seriousness with which God treats His revealed word. It safeguards the integrity of the canon and warns against distortion, manipulation, or exploitation of prophecy for personal gain. It reinforces the authority of Scripture and the necessity of humility when handling revelation that is often cryptic or layered in symbolism. The plagues symbolize divine judgment against those who corrupt or misinterpret the text.

Guard your interpretation: study Scripture with humility, seek sound commentary, and avoid cherry-picking verses to fit preconceived agendas. If you teach or preach, emphasize faithful exposition and ensure your messages align with the broader witness of the Bible. Be wary of sensationalism online or in conversations that twist Revelation to support sensational claims. Practically, approach the text with prayer, community feedback, and careful cross-checking against the witness of Jesus.
