Proverbs 3:24
When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.
Proverbs 3:24
Verse 24 promises peace in rest: you will lie down without fear, and sleep will be sweet. The context emphasizes the durability of Wisdom’s protection even in rest—the sense that secure living under God’s guidance brings inner calm during the night’s vulnerability. In an ancient agrarian setting, nights could be dangerous; this line frames Wisdom as providing not only daytime guidance but nighttime security.
The verse points to God’s peace as a fruit of wisdom and trust. It foreshadows the NT assurance of Christ’s peace that surpasses understanding (Philippians 4:7). It also marks a pattern in wisdom literature: wise living cultivates a peaceable heart anchored in God.
Apply by cultivating routines that reduce anxiety at night: set a reasonable evening schedule, limit doomscrolling, and practice gratitude or prayer before bed. The goal is a restful sleep grounded in trust that God’s wisdom governs life, even amid uncertainties.
