Numbers 15:25

And the priest shall make an atonement for all the congregation of the children of Israel, and it shall be forgiven them; for it is ignorance: and they shall bring their offering, a sacrifice made by fire unto the LORD, and their sin offering before the LORD, for their ignorance:

NUMBERS 15:25

This verse explains the priest’s role: He shall make atonement for the congregation, and it shall be forgiven for their ignorance. The emphasis is on the priestly function as mediator who intercedes and applies the grace of God to communal failure. The phrase “for their ignorance” underscores divine mercy extended through ritual and leadership.

Theologically, it highlights atonement’s mediating mechanism—divine forgiveness mediated through priestly action. It also reinforces the communal dimension of sin and forgiveness in the covenant community.

Practically, this invites trust in spiritual leadership and the practice of confession and forgiveness in communities. When mistakes occur, seeking counsel, confessing, and accepting corrective discipline can restore harmony. It also reminds individuals that forgiveness often comes through communal processes, not merely private remorse.
