When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.

This verse explains the seed that fell by the wayside: when someone hears the word but doesn’t understand, Satan quickly strips away what was sown. It ties directly to the human responsibility of understanding and the devil’s active opposition. The image of the path as “by the way side” would be familiar in agrarian culture and shows how lack of understanding makes the Word vulnerable.
