Matthew 13:17

For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.

Matthew 13:17

Jesus contrasts the experiences of the apostles with those of prophets and righteous men of old. The former longed to see and hear what Jesus’ contemporaries enjoy, but they did not. The prophets yearned for the era of Christ’s ministry; their longing points to the remarkable privilege of witnessing God’s redemptive plan unfold in Jesus. This also serves as a critique of spiritual expectancy and readiness among leaders of the day, who failed to recognize the significance of Jesus.

This passage underscores the mystery of divine revelation: the fullness of what God is doing in Jesus is beyond what earlier generations could have imagined. It highlights privilege and responsibility—those who hear and see most clearly are the recipients of a greater revelation, yet still must respond in faith.

Recognize the privilege of being in the age of fulfillment. Don’t take exposure to the gospel for granted. Practice gratitude and a deeper commitment to follow Jesus, and share the excitement of God’s ongoing work with others who may not yet see. Use your insight to encourage, mentor, and invite others into the story.
