Mark 15:43

Joseph of Arimathaea, an honourable counsellor, which also waited for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved the body of Jesus.

Mark 15:43

Verse 43 introduces Joseph of Arimathea, “an honourable counsellor,” who asks Pilate for Jesus’ body. This is a pivotal moment: a respected member of the Jewish council defies the risk of public association with Jesus by requesting Jesus’ death body. Joseph’s action signals the dawning recognition among some religious leaders that Jesus’ claims may be true, or at least worthy of honor. The act of bravely approaching Pilate demonstrates a willingness to risk status and safety for the sake of Jesus' burial. This burial will fulfill prophecies and provide a proper, respectable burial that contrasts with the public crucifixion.

Cultural notes: In Jewish culture, burial was a personal, family duty, and a quality tomb mattered. Joseph’s wealth and status enable him to procure a tomb.

This moment emphasizes the human response to Jesus’ death. It also foreshadows Jesus’ resurrection: a proper burial in a tomb marks the transition to the empty tomb narrative. Joseph’s bold action is a model of faithful courage in followership, showing that belief in Jesus can translate into courageous, practical steps—even at personal risk.

This invites Christians to consider how to act with courage in assigning dignity to Jesus’ death and message, even when social or political consequences are possible. Practical steps: standing for truth in your workplace, speaking up for those marginalized, or defending vulnerable life. It also prompts generosity toward burial care or memorial practices that honor God, reminding us that faith expresses itself in concrete acts of care and respect.
