Jeremiah 22:21

I spake unto thee in thy prosperity; but thou saidst, I will not hear. This hath been thy manner from thy youth, that thou obeyedst not my voice.

Jeremiah 22:21

This verse marks a turn in the prophetic rebuke: God recalls speaking to Judah in times of prosperity, while they refused to listen. “I spake unto thee in thy prosperity; but thou saidst, I will not hear” captures a stubborn refusal to hear God’s voice when life felt comfortable. The prophet uses personal language—“This hath been thy manner from thy youth”—to press the continuity of rebellious habit from youth to leadership. The cultural backdrop includes a people confident in their security and lineage, often interpreting prosperity as divine blessing and thus ignoring prophetic calls to repentance. The central message is that prosperity can breed spiritual deafness, making people less receptive to correction.

Theologically, the verse challenges the assumption that success inoculates against accountability. It emphasizes God’s persistent call to repentance, even (or especially) when life is easy. It also highlights mercy—God’s willingness to reach out repeatedly, though the response is stubbornness. The passage ties prosperity to responsibility: to listen to God is to live in alignment with the covenant.

Practically, prosperity today can dull spiritual sensitivity. The cure is intentional humility, regular confession, and accountability structures that keep leadership attentive to God. Practical steps include: instituting feedback channels, listening sessions with marginalized voices, and implementing justice-centered policies. Personal heed: avoid spiritual complacency, cultivate gratitude, and maintain disciplines (Scripture, prayer, sabbath) that keep you teachable. The goal is to stay teachable, even when life is comfortable, so you can align with God’s will when correction comes.
