Deuteronomy 31:7

And Moses called unto Joshua, and said unto him in the sight of all Israel, Be strong and of a good courage: for thou must go with this people unto the land which the LORD hath sworn unto their fathers to give them; and thou shalt cause them to inherit it.

Deuteronomy 31:7

Moses explicitly commissions Joshua in the presence of Israel. He emphasizes that Joshua must lead the people to possess the land promised to their ancestors. The setting—before all Israel—highlights the communal aspect of leadership transition: the community bears witness to God’s plan and Joshua’s role in it.

The verse foregrounds divine calling, human responsibility, and communal affirmation. It shows God’s continuing plan through new generations and the necessity of courageous leadership grounded in God’s instruction. It also underscores the continuity of God’s promises across generations.

Modern leaders can learn to seek public affirmation and humility. If you’re stepping into a new leadership role, prepare to articulate the vision, gather support, and remain faithful to the covenant obligations. Practical steps: cast a clear vision, gather elders or mentors for counsel, and invite community accountability to stay aligned with God’s purposes.
