Deuteronomy 13:3

Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

DEUTERONOMY 13:3

Verse 3 deepens the test: do not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer of dreams, for the Lord is testing you to know whether you love the Lord with all your heart and soul. The test is not merely doctrinal assent but motive and devotion. The Wilderness/Wandering years frame this as experiential training in covenant loyalty. The word “proveth” implies refinement, like metal tested by fire. The purpose is to reveal true allegiance and to cultivate a heart that loves God above all else, including personal comfort or national security.

This passage underscores the primacy of love in the covenant: fidelity to the Lord is proven by choice when faced with alternatives. It also asserts that trials can be graciously used by God to strengthen devotion. Theologically, it emphasizes the integration of heart (affections), soul (will), and action (obedience) in worship. The test is not a test of information alone but of love in obedience.

Today, discernment involves recognizing when attractions to new teachings or movements are actually tests of loyalty to Christ. Practice: pause, reflect, and weigh claims against Scripture; seek wise counsel; examine whether a claim leads to greater love, humility, and service. In relationships, workplace, or online communities, ask: does this movement encourage justice and mercy, or does it demand allegiance at the expense of God’s truth? Build routines that keep the heart connected to God—prayer, Scripture, community accountability—so you can pass such tests with integrity.
