2 Corinthians 7:4

Great is my boldness of speech toward you, great is my glorying of you: I am filled with comfort, I am exceeding joyful in all our tribulation.

2 Corinthians 7:4

Paul celebrates boldness in speech and the joy that comes during tribulation. He speaks of abundant confidence in the Corinthians, his pride in them, and his comfort amidst afflictions. The rhetoric of boasting and boldness is not worldly pride; it’s a testimony to faithfulness under pressure. In the context of suffering, Paul’s words encourage perseverance, reminding readers that trials are not wasted; they refine faith and deepen dependence on God. The “great is my boldness” and “glorying” reflect the apostle’s authentic, vulnerable leadership style that invites the community into shared endurance.

Theologically, this passage highlights the paradox of Christian joy in suffering. God’s people are called to rejoice not in distress itself but in the sovereign work God is doing through it. It also demonstrates the Power of God’s comfort in the midst of tribulation, aligning with themes in 2 Corinthians about God comforting His people so they can comfort others (2 Corinthians 1:3-7).

When you face trials, pick up the rhythm of Paul: acknowledge the pain, affirm your trust in God, and allow suffering to deepen character and compassion. Share your burdens with trusted friends or a small group, not to wallow but to receive God’s comfort and to become a source of comfort for others. Celebrate small wins and progress in holiness even during hardship.
