1 John 5:2

By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.

1 John 5:2

This verse builds on the family imagery of spiritual birth: love for God is proven by keeping God’s commandments, and by loving those who are God’s children. The command to love does not exist in isolation from obedience. John’s logic is practical: knowing God (intimate relationship) yields adoration and obedience; obedience to God’s will becomes a measurable sign of authentic love for the children of God. The phrase “we love the children of God” implies mutual affection and solidarity within the believing community. Keeping commandments is not merely a list of rules but living in alignment with God’s will as revealed in Jesus. In a world of shifting moral standards, this verse anchors ethical discernment in divine instruction and relational trust within the family of God.

Theological themes include obedience as the fruit of love, and a social anthropology of faith: love for God translates into love for the family of God. The verse ties piety to community theology—the people of God are defined by their love and obedience combined. It also underscores the reliability of God’s will as normative for communal life, guarding against libertine individualism that erodes the church’s witness.

In practice: observe how you treat other believers. Do you show love in practical ways—listening, serving, forgiving—especially when they’re difficult to love? Keep God’s commandments not as burdensome rules but as a path that shapes your daily interactions—honoring parents, respecting elders, practicing honesty, showing mercy, and pursuing justice within the church and beyond. Small, consistent acts of obedience reinforce trust and unity in the body.
